Keeping The Area Clean
There is no shortage of Red Faced (Turkey) Vultures around the area and you can often see them traveling in pairs as they ride the thermals over grasslands and swamps looking for dead animals to feed on. A service we may not notice but a needed one no doubt.
Not as noticed and certainly not as common are Black Faced Vultures. I have seen several of them mostly around the city’s water works and local lakes off of Kempsville Road area
Peregrine Falcon in Norfolk ?
First thing this morning as I drove on Tidewater Dr. heading past the Roland Park overpass I noticed feathers raining down onto the road. On closer look I saw a Hawk on one of the telephone poles and decided to go back and see if I might get a picture even though the sky was overcast and the day was dreary. Once I was closer I saw to my surprise that it was a Falcon , not a normal visitor to this area . Normally this is the nesting area for several Osprey who’s home is the cell phone tower beside the road at this overpass but it will be March or so before they come back to the nesting site to work on cleaning up and getting ready for the new chicks that are bound to come with the spring.
Peregrine Falcon eating a too slow Pigeon.
Pretty amazing finding this fellow wandering the roadways for a meal and I hope to get the chance to see this beautiful bird again.
